A Note About Custom Woven Tartans

If the tartan you need is not available from the stock range of any of the major Scottish woolen mills, I will have the cloth custom woven for you.  If you want to design your own tartan, or have me design one for you, this can be done as well.

When I do this, you, the client, and I, the kilt maker, are entering into a relationship of trust.

You need to trust me, and my years of experience dealing with tartans, to be able to use my judgment when I order the cloth, that I order the correct tartan, and when the cloth arrives, to verify that it was woven correctly.  If the tartan is not correct, I will send it back to the mill and have the correct tartan woven.

I am trusting you that you will trust my expertise in this matter.  This means that I trust you not to return a tailor-made kilt to me and demand your money back because you believe the red in your tartan is more of a crimson when you wanted a scarlet, or the green should be more of a forest green and not a bottle green.

In any stock tartan, I can have the mill send out a swatch so that you can see exactly what the tartan looks like before hand.  I cannot do this with custom weaves, because your tartan does not exist until it is woven.  And by then the money has been invested.  Once I receive the cloth I can email you a digital picture of it before I do any cutting.  But colors do not always translate well on a computer screen.

What it boils down to is that you need to trust that I will supply you with the correct tartan.  Again, my ultimate goal is to provide you with a kilt that you will be happy with and enjoy wearing for a long, long time.

The Parr tartan (above) is not stocked by any tartan mill, but I was glad to have it woven for two brothers who wanted kilts.

The "Black MacGregor" tartan, a personal variation of the standard MacGregor tartan, specifically requested by the client.
